Retirement...reflections....

I thought life was suppose to slow down when you retired...but what I am finding out is that one is just as busy, but the activities are of choice rather than what has to be done.....at least if you play your cards right it is. I just got back from California last Monday....I had several of those full circle moments....One of the moments had to do with reflecting on this last year and all of the things that have come to fruition for Katie...it has been one year since she graduated and received her R.N. degree. She has lived independently for the first time, started a career, bought her first car and basically really has come into her own.....it has been a year of firsts. The second full circle moment came when Katie and I went up to Sequoia National Park area for a wedding of one of our good friends. I took care of the groom when he was a baby and all of his siblings were childhood friends with my kids. It was so much fun to see him as a man and too share the happiness of his wedding. I think his mom, who has been like a sister to me, went back to work when he was about 3 mo. old. I took care of his brother and sister along with my two kids. Later another little baby was added to that family who was also one of mine. It didn't seem to slow me down any. I remember loading them all into the back seat of my 1969 Javelin and going to the grocery store or to the park, seat belts were not required. We just stacked them in....older ones on the bottom....little ones on top. We had a lot of fun...and now it is wonderful to see them all grown up and starting careers and families of their own. This year has been a year of engagements, weddings, and graduations.... his sister, Stephanie became an RN this year.....It has been a blue ribbon year of firsts for them also....friends are so important...and I feel like the Rice's are extended family to our family. Even their extended family of uncles, aunts and grandparents have been a part of our lives for 30 years.....it makes life so rich to have long term friends that you love.
I came back from California on Monday and on Thursday my 3 grandsons came down for a few days, while mom got a little break. Their dad was off to Mexico as part of a pit crew for the Baja Race....that is his relaxation.... The boys are busy and fun...it doesn't take much to entertain them. Whatever is happening around the house is what they want to do. This visit Papa brought home go carts and they spent a lot of time with him in the driveway trying to get the carts running.
I thought, " I must be the most boring person in the whole world"....because being with my family is the best.....and/or my extended family....but that is OK.....because as long as I love it that is all that matters....and I do love it!!!! And let's face it I am boring!!

Soooo fun to read. Nice try, but you are NOT boring!! You are living a rich full life - and I love to keep learning more about you. Travels, schooling, Teaching, Church service, your days as a quisinart demonstrator, all the things you've done w/ Linda, your vast gardening knowledge...I could go on and on! But boring or not - being with family IS the best. :)

Jess is SO excited about the go carts!!! (And he was a DRIVER this time around) :)
