On the 20th of September we had the pleasure of meeting our friends, Ester and Sam Miller, at the train depot in Flagstaff. They are Amish and we have known them for about 10 years. We always told them if they ever came out west we would be glad to take them to the Grand Canyon. This is the year it happened and we had such a good time with them. They are traditional Amish. Their main form of transportation is a horse and buggy, similar to the one above, but they are able to ride other people’s cars. We picked them up early in the morning and enjoyed the whole day with them. We saw the Grand Canyon, then we took them to Cottonwood by way of Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. They were very excited with the beautiful scenery. At their previous home in Ohio, there were only rolling hills. At their new home in Pennsylvania there are higher hills and small mountains, but nothing like what they saw in Arizona. They bought many postcards to show their family and friends when they returned home. We have been to both of their homes and were glad to have them come and spend the night with us. Ester has a lovely home with all the conveniences allowed within their culture. She has running cold water in the house (hot water is not allowed), wonderful wood stoves that she uses for heat and cooking. I can still smell how good her house smelled when I was there. Ice boxes, which are cooled with ice that has been harvested in the winter from ponds. A large basement where she keeps her home canned fruit, vegetables and meat. . It never gets above 50 in basement...I wish I had one like it. Her house is spit spot clean and very comfortable. We had a great time visiting. They had to leave early the next morning to make the train. We are more alike than different. We both think that family is the most important thing in life.

I didn't know that they had moved to Pennsylvania! - I still remember the basement of their house in Ohio w/ all the canned food - really a beautiful site! And the wonderful cakes sitting on the table that she had made and shared with us.
You have some AMAZING photos on the side - all the sunsets! wow!
