Sara called Monday night to tell us that Jess had been burned on the "Butte" fire in northern California. He stepped into a burning stump hole that was covered with debris. The fire chief from Doney Park called and told us that Jess and the other men had been over the same field several times...and on the way back while he was carrying equipment he stepped into the hole.
His men were right at his back and had him out immediatly, but it was like stepping into a hot charchoal BBQ pit. His boots protected his feet...but above his ankles he was burned. He tried to walk out, but the pain was too great. He was helicoptered out and taken to Sacarmento which was about 100 miles south of the fire.
Katie couldn't stand not see for herself and wanting to make sure he was OK, so she left the next morning and drove 6 hours to find him. She has reported that he is doing very well, giving the nurses a hard time (which she sympathises with them) and is in good spirits. His pain level is being controlled. Jess told me that the pain was so bad the first 45 min. that any pain after that he considers minimal. She reported back to me at midnight last night that she had helped change his dressings with the other nurse and doctor. She said his legs look pretty good. The right leg is burnt worse than the left with approx. 30% involved...mostly in the front. The Dr. said he would not need skin grafs. So, that is a great relief.
The little boys are with us. They are very comfortable here and we will have a good time. Sara is flying there today. The fire department is taking good care of her and wants she and Jess to be together....and she is happy to comply. She has felt torn as to what to do...with Jess continuing to tell her, "It's OK...you don't need to be here". She will do much better being with him and seeing for herself.
Nana and Papa will hold the fort down .....that is what I can do best at this time. The little boys are excited that momma has gone to bring daddy home....so all is well.

I was surprised when I read about this in the Flagstaff paper. Now I know the story, the article left out a lot of details. Hope he recovers nicely.
