35th Wedding Anniversary

Carla and I....I just wanted 1 bride's maid...I was also into keeping it simple...and I kind of scoffed at giant weddings....what did I know? Most of my friends had also gone their own ways by then and were married and living in all parts of the world.
Mom and I getting ready.....Mom was 63 yrs. old in this picture...I was 23 years old.
Steve and I...our cake was not a white cake...that was very edgy at the time....chocolate layers and carrot cake layers...now it is common.
Eric Williams, Curt Williams and Grandma Foote

My friend Arleen (Wolf) Wilson's little girl. Arleen was living in Cottonwood at the time.
Today has been a day....I went to Flagstaff for a funeral (my good friend Ida Smithson's). On the way home I was, once again, remembering it was our anniversary, even though Steve and I had talked about it this morning....but during the funeral I forgot. Actually the weather today is a lot like the day we got married....snow flurries, sunshine, fast moving clouds and breezy. So of course it has been a "memory lane" kind of day.
We had a great wedding day. Many family and friends came up from Mesa. We still had quite a few friends in Flagstaff from our days at NAU. Steve's dad and mom were there. His sister and her friends from Ohio were able to be there too. Mom had procured a floor of rooms at Little America. We all stayed there the night before...including most of the guests who came up from Mesa. We had our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner the night before...and then the day of the wedding we had our reception also at Little America.

I remember really enjoying the day. It had been a hassle finding someone who would marry us. I wasn't active in the church at the time....and I didn't want to be married on a basketball court (the cultural hall)...but I did want to be married in a church. When we visited different pastors we had quite a few different experiences. The Catholic Church said they wouldn't marry us, unless I took lessons and agreed to raise my children in their church. The Baptists (they had such a cute little church on S. Beaver) said they couldn't do it with a clear conscience....so we found an interdenominational pastor that said he would be glad to do it.

I just remember having the best time visiting with family and friends. Everything went just as we had planned it. We were married at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning. We had a light lunch buffet and I remember the food was really good...however, we did not get to eat any of it until we were off on our honeymoon. The staff prepared a "to go" box of all the items from the buffet for us to take as we left...that is a tradition that I have tried to continue when I help with a wedding...the bride and groom are just too busy to eat.

After it was all done....I just remember thinking, "This has been such a fun day!" We honeymooned in Sedona .....for one night and both of us were back to work on Monday morning!
That was in the day of complete dedication to our jobs.....now I always encourage kids to have a "real" honeymoon....their work can wait...but we thought we had to be at work...too dedicated. Believe me...they could have gotten along without us! (but we were too young to understand that).

Anyway it was a wonderful day....and now it is 35 years later......At Ida's funeral they mentioned that she and John had been married for 65 years.....so onward and upward to the next 30 years!!

Happy Anniversary Steve.....
I love you!!!!
